Beyond Standard Aerial Detection Benchmarks

VisDrone2019 and UAVDT established aerial object detection benchmarks. Production aerial AI for infrastructure inspection, agriculture, search and rescue, and logistics requires custom scene types and object taxonomies those benchmarks do not cover.

Infrastructure inspection AI must detect specific structural defects from aerial perspective. Agricultural AI must identify crop conditions, pest damage, and equipment from farm drone footage. VisDrone's urban traffic and pedestrian focus does not transfer to these applications.

Off-the-shelf aerial datasets suffer from geographic and scene bias (Chinese urban environments dominate VisDrone) and object taxonomy limitations for domain-specific aerial detection tasks.

LXT builds custom aerial object detection datasets with your drone platform, target object classes, and collection geography. We deliver altitude-matched, geographically diverse aerial imagery with precise annotations for your aerial AI application.

Limitations of Public Aerial Object Detection Datasets

Standard benchmarks serve research well. Production deployments need more.

DatasetPrimary LimitationImpact
VisDrone2019Chinese urban environments only; pedestrian and vehicle focus; specific altitude and camera parameters; no agricultural, industrial, or infrastructure coverageUrban-only
UAVDTUrban traffic only; vehicle detection and tracking; limited to road environments; Chinese city biasTraffic-only
DotD (Drone-Top-Down)Top-down perspective only; limited object classes; no oblique, multi-altitude, or custom geographic coverageTop-down only
UAV123Single object tracking focus; not multi-object detection; specific UAV type and camera parametersTracking-only
VisDrone-MOTMulti-object tracking extension of VisDrone; same geographic and class limitations as base benchmarkUrban tracking

Edge Cases in Aerial Detection

High-accuracy models handle rare attributes that public datasets miss.

Very Small Object Detection

Objects at high altitudes appear as a few pixels. Precise annotation with minimum pixel dimension thresholds and resolution-matched collection protocols address small object training quality.

Scale Variation Across Altitudes

The same object appears at very different scales across altitude tiers. Multi-altitude collection with matched annotation ensures scale-invariant detection model training.

Dense Crowd and Vehicle Packing

Urban aerial views contain densely packed pedestrians and vehicles. Dense packing annotation with crowd flags and per-instance bounding boxes supports accurate dense detection training.

Shadow and Occlusion from Canopy

Tree canopy and building shadows create partial occlusion and lighting variation in aerial imagery. Canopy and shadow condition annotations support occlusion-robust aerial detectors.

Human-in-the-Loop Annotation

Precise annotation bridges raw data and learnable signal. Expert annotators deliver precision automated tools can't match.

📦

Aerial Bounding Box Annotation

Expert annotators draw tight object bounding boxes from drone perspective with class labels, size estimates, and occlusion flags. Dense packing handled with instance-level annotation.

🧭

Track and ID Labels

Frame-level object track IDs for aerial multi-object tracking and re-identification model training across altitude changes and viewpoint variation.

📊

Altitude and Flight Metadata

Per-frame altitude AGL, GPS coordinates, gimbal angle, and camera parameters for geo-referenced annotation and altitude-aware detection model training.

Aerial Detection Dataset FAQs

Can you collect across multiple altitudes and camera angles?+
Yes. We design multi-altitude collection profiles with matched annotation protocols. Per-altitude sub-datasets are available for altitude-stratified model evaluation.
What drone platforms and cameras do you use?+
We use DJI Mavic, Phantom, Matrice, and Inspire platforms, plus fixed-wing aircraft for large-area coverage. Camera specifications are matched to your production system where possible.
How do you handle aviation regulations for collection?+
All flights are conducted by licensed commercial pilots under applicable regulations. We obtain necessary airspace authorizations and coordinate with local authorities for restricted areas.
What annotation formats do you deliver?+
COCO JSON, YOLO TXT, VisDrone annotation CSV, and custom formats. Geo-referenced annotations with GPS coordinates and GSD metadata where required.
Can you collect across multiple geographies?+
Yes. We coordinate collection across multiple countries and terrain types. Geographic distribution is documented and can be balanced across your target deployment regions.
What does a custom aerial detection dataset cost?+
Projects range from $20K for focused single-scene datasets (5,000-20,000 frames) to $150K+ for large multi-altitude, multi-geography collections.
Can you provide video sequences for tracking?+
Yes. Video sequences with frame-level track annotations are available for aerial multi-object tracking and re-ID model development.
